January Update

A couple of things happened in January. First DH received the custom made splint that had been made for him in December. The procedure for making the splint was quite interesting.

First they put a nylon on his leg.

Next they used fiberglass casting material to make a cast of his leg and foot.

They used a piece of rubber tubing along the front of his shin to make a place to cut the cast open and create the opening for the splint. We had to wait a few weeks to get the splint but it fits snugly and DH says it is much easier to put on and to wear than the boot he was using. He will be in this splint at least until May 20 so it's best to have something comfortable. He is also using an ultra-sound bone growth stimulator from a company called Exogen. He straps it to his ankle for 2 twenty minute sessions each evening.

DH also had a little problem with a low hematocrit and low iron along with a high reticulocite count so the Dr. suspected he might be bleeding inside. He went for a colonoscopy and an EGD which looks at the stomach and upper digestive system for problems. Dr seemed to think that the Aleve might be causing bleeding in the small intestines cause he saw irritation in the stomach and the duodenum. Here he is recovering after his endoscopy procedure at the Central Utah Clinic.
